Position Description: 

The Sporting Analytics – Data Analyst will be responsible for delivering data insights from the Data Analytics Department to the coaching and technical staff across all national teams. Their role will be to ensure that any ad-hoc questions are answered quickly and in a clear and effective manner making extensive use of data visualization, as well as developing and maintaining regular opposition, post-match and custom reports.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Quickly answer any ad-hoc questions from the coaching staff balancing effective and thorough work with quick turnaround times
  • Responsible for building out and maintaining automated reports including opposition and post-match reports
  • Build out a library of data visualizations based on the metrics and KPIs developed by the data analytics team
  • Iterate on existing reports and visualizations with feedback from technical staff, working closely with performance analysts
  • Align data reporting structures with video analysis with the ability to build out presentations combining video and data insights
  • Develop reporting structures to track national team pool players in their club environments
  • Work with technical staff on developing series of KPIs to accurately measure game model and prepare for upcoming opponents
  • Communicate outputs of complex models to non-technical audiences using “soccer” language
  • Support data analytics team on longer term projects ensuring alignment with national team requirements
Requirements

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Post-Secondary Qualification in Performance Analysis, Mathematics, Computer Science or equivalent area of study
  • Strong tactical knowledge and understanding of soccer
  • Strong data visualization background
  • Comfortable using data science programming languages such as Python or R
  • Ability to query SQL-style databases
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in presenting data concepts to non-technical audience
  • 0-5 years experience working with coaches and/or video analysts
  • Previous experience working in a professional or college sporting environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and work with various different management styles and coaches
  • Proven ability to work to tight timelines and deliver high quality work able and willing to travel up to 15% of the year
  • Able and willing to work non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends as needed

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with a club or national team
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the overall soccer landscape in the U.S.
  • Strong verbal, written, in-person and presentation communication skills
  • Coaching and/or playing experience preferred
  • Bilingual (English, Spanish, or other)
  • Knowledge of video analysis softwares and workflows (particularly Hudl Sportscode and general Hudl ecosystem)
  • Experience with cloud based data architecture such as AWS, GCP or Azure
  • Ability to work in version control with Git
  • Thorough institutional knowledge of U.S. Soccer’s mission, goals, technical plan, policies, practices, and procedures
